2017-2018 Open House  Our 2017-2018 WHS Open House is Thursday, September 28th, at 7 PM.  We are proud to say that this will be the first ‘Open House’ in our ‘New House’! We will begin promptly in the auditorium at 7 pm. Our teams and clubs will be set up in the dining commons for their traditional fundraising efforts. You can purchase all your 2017-2018 Sachem spirit gear from these groups! Worried about getting lost in the new WHS?  Our Student PALs will be available to guide you to your destinations. But, this is a great time to have a conversation with your student(s) at home and ask them to teach you the layout of the school and the pattern of their daily school day. We look forward to seeing you on September 28th at 7 PM!  Please know that we are aware of the conflict with the football game that evening.  The game was moved to accommodate the religious holiday observance.  The dates for Open House are set during the summer across the district and cannot be moved. With a big busy school with many events, conflicts are an unfortunate inevitability.  We try our best to avoid them, but they do occur.

Just in case that conversation doesn’t happen, here is a great “footprint” layout for you of our newly finished WHS.  This should help you navigate during our upcoming open house.

2017-2018: Episode 2

What a week we just had! Rarely, if ever, will a week at WHS have two major happenings at the same time like we just had.  First, if you have not heard, our Girls Field Hockey team beat Watertown and made national news.  Why national news?  This was Watertown’s first defeat in over 8 years!  We are so proud of our girls and coaches for stepping up and not being afraid to go toe-to-toe with the best.  Our girls have now been featured in USA Today Online and will be in a number of other national publications. I spoke with coaches from neighboring towns and they were so happy for our girls and even happier that now their girls believe in themselves just a little more than they did before.  My favorite part was the way the girls celebrated the win with class and dignity.  They believed in themselves and then went out and did it and acted like that was how it was supposed to happen.  While we all know it was a big deal, they acted with poise and respect for the opposing team.  I could not have been prouder of them.  It is in these moments that people are reminded that this isn’t just any high school, this is THE Winchester High School!

And besides our girls making history, the very next day our school and community made some more history with our ribbon cutting ceremony for the new WHS.  This milestone event, attended by Senator Lewis, Representative Day, and State Treasurer Goldberg as well as a number of past alumni, community members and retired faculty.  The event, held on our front steps, was witnessed by our entire student body and faculty.  The band graciously played the Star Spangled Banner as well as our school fight song!  The day was picture perfect and truly a once in a career event.

The event was captured by WinCam as well as our own WHS Red + Black online:

Who is new at WHS?

Palacios

Name:  Ms. Samantha Palacios

What do you do at WHS? Special Education Teacher: Co-Teach History, Spanish, and Italian.

Where did you grow up? Weymouth, MA

Where did you go to school or college? Undergrad: Suffolk University, Grad: Boston University

Why did you come to Winchester? I came to Winchester because I loved what I saw in the community. It is truly all about the students throughout the district and everyone is so supportive and engaged. Throughout the interview process everyone I met was so kind and honest and it felt like such a natural fit.

What is one interesting fact? One interesting fact about me is that I studied abroad in Spain in college and was able to travel all around Europe exploring new cultures. It was a once in a lifetime experience and I always tell my students that they have to do it!

What is your favorite quote or what was the last book you read? One of my professors at BU who is also the assistant superintendent of Hingham Public Schools once said in my class “Learning is not one size fits all”, it really stuck with me and I try to always plan lessons around that.

2017-2018: Episode 1

Welcome and welcome back to the Team WHS Blog!

This year we are excited to be opening the now completed and renovated new WHS.   The new spaces are amazing and we thank the community for providing us the learning spaces that our students deserve.    Our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is tomorrow, Tuesday 9-12 and the entire staff and student body will be on hand to take in the moment.  We will be sure to take many pictures throughout the morning and post them on the Instagram (whssachems) and Twitter (whsmahoney) accounts.

Our Back To School Night will be September 28th at 7 PM.  More information about this event will come out soon.

There will be Community Tours for anyone wishing to see inside the revitalized WHS on October 13th and 14th.  Please watch this space for more information.

Here is the summer letter that we sent out to all families.  The points and sentiments in this letter will help shape and inform all the decisions we make this year and going forward. https://docs.google.com/a/winchesterps.org/document/d/1MBC5uC49Bs0wOP7RRkrApSjpsSBwbbxTm0jGTaKNSGQ/edit?usp=sharing

Welcoming our Class of 2021:  Each year at the start of school we meet separately with every grade to say hello, set a few expectations and get them excited for the coming school year.  The link below brings you to the slides from our Class of 2021 meeting.  There were multiple messages but the main focus is always about making good decisions, asking for help and being kind.

9_11_remembrance

The following will be read today, Monday 9/11, to our school at 8:46 AM:  Today, Monday, September 11th we will observe with a moment of silence to respect and honor the 16th anniversary of 9/11/2001.  Many of you were not born then, but your family members and our staff will always remember that day. This was the day that our country was attacked and many lost their lives. Today, we remember the men and women who died; and those families who lost loved ones. We also honor those who responded to the tragedy, such as fire fighters, police officers, doctors and the thousands of everyday people who risked their lives to help others. Today, we celebrate America’s resilience, ability to work together, help one another, and commit to respecting all people -no matter race, culture, creed or lifestyle. September, 11, 2001 was one of the worst moments in American history, and one that will never be forgotten.  Our moment of silence is a moment to reflect and to show tribute to those who lost their lives and those who risked their lives in order to help others.
