Season 2:  Episode 9

Our Italian Language students taking in the DaVinci exhibit at the MOS.

The first quarter is in the books and I am so impressed by the amount of effort and hard work our kids put into everything they do.  I appreciate them for how good they make WHS look every day.

The next few weeks are going to be quite disjointed with 3 days of school this week, five days next week and then two and a half days (with all of our Spirit Week events) the following week.  These coming days may add up to a lot of stressful moments for all of us but especially for our students.

Right now we have many students who are playing in state tournament games, getting ready for the first school play of the year, “Murder Mystery at the Murder Mystery”, students who may be disappointed with their quarter one performance, students who may have over worked themselves during quarter one or students who are just struggling day to day.

This week, like every week, the message to the students will be to remember to support each other, to enjoy what we are doing and to take care of ourselves.

Q1 Grades:  Grades will be posted in Aspen for students and parents on 11/16.  Please make sure you have logged onto Aspen so that you know you have the access you need.

Upcoming Events and important information:

9th grade:  West Side Story at the North Shore Music Theater on Thursday, November 17, Day 5.  8:30 am departure.  Students will miss half of their A block class and at least half of their F block class on that day.

The student founders of the club, Francesca Panzara and  Becky Wentworth, found inspiration for the club two years ago after completing their National History Day documentary project on the history of the UNICEF organization in my World History II Honors class. They wanted to take what they had learned about the good work UNICEF does and bring awareness of that cause to the local community. Seniors Lali Albrecht and Abby Joseph are also student advisers to the club.

Recently, the WHS UNICEF Club hosted its second annual Pumpkin Painting Party to raise money for the UNICEF cause.  They also set up a booth at the Winchester Farmer’s Market to reach out to the Winchester community and educate citizens on the work that UNICEF does as well as fund-raise for the “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” fund.

The passion and drive of the UNICEF Club is really indicative of what Sachems spirit is all about!

From the Creative Technology Center:                                                                                          Ms. Zampatella, Ms. Grace and Mr. Hackett are proud to announce a Creative Technology Lecture Series.  The goal is to bring in guest lecturers whose work bridges the arts, sciences, mathematics, and humanities.  The first lecture will be held Wednesday, November 9 in the WHS Library from 2:30 – 3:30 PM.  Feature artist Brian Knep whose work explores artificial intelligence, biology, engineering, and art will be WHS’ guest.

Brian’s ‘Healing Series’ “are interactive floor projections with patterns that change in response to visitors. When visitors walk across, the patterns pull away, creating wounds. When left alone, the patterns grow to cover these wounds. In each of the pieces, however the patterns grow back in different ways.” (From Brian’s website)

Our students John Clewley and Ana Watson have designed posters for the event (attached in this email).  We hope to cast a wide net and bring as many community members to the lecture as possible.  Please join us and feel free to use the event as a curriculum opportunity!  To see a video of Brian’s Healing Series, click here.
