Team WHS Blog: Season 2, Episode 2

Freshman science lab collaboration in action

Hello and welcome back again to the Team WHS Blog.  We had a great week as we continue to settle into our routine and new spaces here at WHS.  Our faculty and students are adjusting well as we continue to get certain parts of our building up and running.  Personally, I have visited several classes and I always walk away impressed with the level of instruction from our teachers and the engagement by our students.

We had our first fire drill this past week and did an excellent job of adjusting to our new safety routes.  I was impressed with our students and the level of respect they showed for the fire drill process.

Open House:  Our ‘Open House’ is this Thursday night, 9/22/16, at 7 pm.  We will begin promptly in the auditorium at 7 pm.  Our teams and clubs will be set up in the dining commons for their traditional fundraising efforts.  You can purchase all your Sachem spirit gear from these groups and even bid on my own parking space in the very front of WHS at the PFA booth.  Speaking of parking, this Thursday night parking will be difficult.  Please plan accordingly.  Carpooling with neighbors and friends is always a great way to make Open House a fun night out.  Walking if the weather permits would also be a nice idea.  Though we will provide you with school maps, our Student PALs will be available to guide you to your destinations as it is likely you may struggle to find your designated classrooms.  Please ask your student(s) ahead of time where you can expect to go for each class visit.

Aspen training for parents:  Aspen training workshops will be running in the Library/Media Center throughout the night.  Aspen is the Winchester Public Schools new student information system.  The Aspen Parent and Student portals provide access to student academic progress, attendance information, student schedules, report cards, and more.   Please stop by the WHS Media Center during open house if you have questions or would like hands-on assistance with Aspen.

Freshman Family Night Notes:  Please click on the link below to view the Google doc of  questions and answers from last week’s successful and informative Freshman Family Night.

WHS award winners:  A big congratulations to National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists Award of Excellence winners Anisah Sahibul Michael Xiang.  These awards are nationally recognized awards of distinction, and we are proud of our students’ achievements!

Student Stress Release:  Sign-ups for interested students for our stress-release classes (Yoga, Meditation, and Crossfit) are currently in the main office.  These are non-binding, non-commitment offerings for our students that will take place before and after school when we see enough interest.  If you believe your student will enjoy the advantages of these programs, please make sure that they sign up soon.

Attention families of Seniors:  It’s time to order your Cap & Gown!  Caps & Gowns can be ordered online at between Sept. 23rd and Dec 1st. Each outfit consists of a Cap, Gown and Tassel. The cost is $15.50, and you will need a credit/debit card to complete the transaction. If you have questions, see Mrs. Flood in the Main Office or email her at sflood@winchesterps.or

Some key information and dates of note:

Click this link to apply. The application deadline is Friday, September 23 at 11:59 pm. Acceptance to WiSE is on a lottery basis, and participants will be notified by October 2nd.

WISE is an opportunity for high school girls to be mentored at MIT this fall. Application deadline next Friday. Contact Mr. Petty or MIT SWE if you have questions.

Fall Sports Schedule:

9/22: WHS Open House 7PM

9/25: The 4th Annual Glen Doherty Memorial Road Race.

9/26:  Our own Guru Ramanathan will be screening his feature length documentary “Hyper-“ about student stress at Winchester High School.  I have watched the documentary, and I am deeply impressed with the message, the emotion and Guru’s obvious talent.  Guru is simultaneously supporting his passion for film and the town that he loves.  The screening will be held at the Next Door Theater @7pm and is open to the public.
