Hello WHS,

I hope that you were able to enjoy our long weekend.  The Kelleys, celebrated Easter with our immediate and extended family.  My husband, Tim is the master chef while I enjoy setting up and getting everything ready.  I hope that you were able to have some family time during our 3-day weekend.

Monday Updates:

  1. Please stop in at today’s Community Open House.  We will have tours at 5:45 and our extended concerts (due to the last week’s snow day) will begin at 6:30.  Thank you to our PALs group who will host tours.    

  1. We have many students interested in the statewide Student Advisory Council.  As a result, we will have an online election this week.  Please be on the lookout (students only) for an email.

  1. Thank you to the many staff, students and parents who participated in meet the candidates for the two finalists for WHS principal.  As mentioned in Dr. Evans email, a subcommittee of the Interviewing team will travel to Dennis Mahoney’s home district this week.

  1. Winchester’s Got Lunch will be collecting cans of tuna during the month of May.  So please, start stocking up.  More information to follow.

  1. We are pleased to be having a group called the Improbable Players come to WHS on April 14th during the day for all of our students  Their program is called “I’ll Never Do That.”  On April 14th, we will also host a parent presentation by the group at7:00 pm in our new auditorium.  We are  thrilled to have these wonderful program  presentations which are sponsored by the Winchester Coalition for a Safer Community, in partnership and with the financial support of the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence.  For more info:  http://www.improbableplayers.org/_index.php

  1. Lights, Camera, Fashion!  You are invited to the annual WHS Student Fashion Show on Thursday, March 31st from 7 to 8 pm. The event will take place in the new High School Auditorium.  Join us along the red carpet to view the various looks and styles assembled by talented WHS students based on your favorite Hollywood themes. Music will be performed by local group “The Third Wing” Tickets are $8.00 in advance $10.00 at the door.Tickets on sale now at Revel and also available through WHS Art Director Jenn Levatino:jlevatino@winchesterps.org

Older Updates:

Graduation plans are set.  Our plan is to have our WHS Class of 2016 Graduation on Manchester Field (behind McCall) outside on Sunday, June 5th at 4:00 pm-NOTE the later time in the day to helpful avoid the heat of the day.  (Rain Date will be Monday, June 6th at 6:00 pm).  We will be sending out more information regarding senior week activities. Keep checking your Edline account for updates.

Shout Out:

  1. Congratulations to the Moody’s Math Challenge winners.  For the fourth year in a row, our team was selected as Honorable mention (with $1000 prize money for scholarship funding).  This distinction is that we finished in the top 78 of over 1,100 teams that participated.  This year’s team included:  Qiuyue Liu, Rosanna Zhang, Katherine Deng, Isabel Paine, and Christina Hain.  Thank you too to teachers Mr. Mackenzie and Mrs. Simeone who worked on putting the team together.

Staff Spotlight

Meet the Athletic Office Staff

Marc Arria-Athletic Director

Marc grew up in Somerville and Medford.  He attended Malden Catholic High School and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Management from UMass Boston and then Master’s Degree in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University.  He first started out working in Finance at Mellon Financial. He then left to become the Athletic Director at Matignon High School in Cambridge and was there for four years.   He also coached the girls’ volleyball team. Marc then went on to be the Director of Athletics & Wellness and girls’ volleyball coach at Mystic Valley Regional Charter School.  Marc then came to Winchester in November of 2013.  He has been married to his wife for almost six years and they have a Golden Retriever named Olive.

Nancy M. Volpe – Secretary to the Athletic Director

Nancy Volpe is the assistant to Athletic Director Marc Arria.  Nancy has served in this position for almost five years.  Prior to joining Winchester High School athletics Nancy was assistant secretary in the guidance office.  Nancy’s career in the Winchester school system spans almost 15 years.  Nancy was born and raised in Winchester and she also attended Winchester High prior to receiving an associates degree in secretarial administration. Nancy is married with two wonderful daughters and is a Winchester resident.
