Hello WHS!  As you may realize, our mid term progress notes were due this week and should be heading out soon.  If you (like me, as Reading High’s went out last week), have questions regarding your child’s grades to date, my first bit of advice is to have your child check with their teacher to ask the questions.  If he/she then needs support, you can shoot the teacher an email on suggestions for your child to improve/get on track.  You can also reach out to your son or daughter’s guidance counselor as they are always willing to support our students.  Our staff, like you, wants each student to reach their true potential.  And  It is also nice to send some “Well Done!” emails to staff when you know your child is off to a great start and is really connecting with them.

Here are some Monday updates.

  • We are still looking for a student representative for our School Council.  The School Council is made up of teachers, community members, parents and students (as well as the principal).  We will meet regularly for updates and to put together a School Improvement Plan.  This is a GREAT opportunity for those student leaders who wish to be an important, though not always visible role.  If you wish to be considered you should know that we will meet before school at 6:45 am monthly (or less if we set up sub committee meetings that will meet at different times).  Please email Mrs. Kelley at ckelley@winchesterps.org if you are interested.

  • Yearbook Update-Just a reminder for seniors and senior parents-the deadline for senior portraits and parent dedication pages is Wednesday, October 28th.  Information about portrait specifications and forms for parent ads can be found at the WHS Yearbook website at:  http://winchesteryearbook.jimdo.com  Any student can also purchase a yearbook for the 2016 edition on the site.

Memo Shout-Outs- We have so much to be proud of here at WHS.  I have asked staff to send me regular shout out announcements so we can recognize some of our great happenings for our WHS community. (If you have a shout out to share-please email me at ckelley@winchesterps.org)

  • Congratulations to our new Class officers from the 9th grade!  We have President-Anna Flaherty, Vice President-Henry Dybowski, Treasurer-Emma Driscoll and Secretary-Camille Xiang.  We had a great showing of interested students and some really spectacular speeches that were presented.  I’m so proud of all who ran for office and look forward to working alongside teacher advisors-Ms. Haine and Ms. Turney as well as Assistant Principal Mrs. Mochrie with this group!

  • The Autumnal WPS Student Art Exhibition is now at the Winchester Public Library.  There are 70 WPS students from K-12 featured in this year’s exhibit.  Please come by the Library from now until November 30th.  In addition, there will be a special reception (with awards and refreshments) on Nov. 10th from 6-8pm.  All are welcomed.  Congratulations to our very own Art Department, our outstanding educators and Visual Art Director as well as the many talented student artists featured in this exhibit.  Also a special shout-out to Andrew at Frame Haven and Dave at Winchester Art and Frame who donated time and materials to make our art work look spectacular!

  • Beginning this week, 38 Spanish 5 students will begin their teaching careers as they visit two of Lynch School´s Integrated Preschool classes.  Based on a project designed by Ms. Kudlate, this is the fourth year students will be responsible for preparing short lessons of some basic Spanish vocabulary and presenting them to four and five year old students in Mrs. Blair and Mrs. Wilkerson´s classes.  Some topics include animals, numbers, and colors.   They are  all looking forward to the experience and to instilling passion for communicating and learning a language at a young age!

Team WHS-

In this section, I hope to introduce or reintroduce our community to members of our community.

  • Meet Katherine Donahue who is a new Social Studies teacher teaching 9th grade World History and 10th Grade World History II.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Boston College and has recently completed her master’s degree from Teachers’ College, Columbia University.  Although she loved studying in NYC, she is a Boston girl at heart.  She loves being back in the Bay State, close to friends and family is so happy to join TEAM WHS.  She feels that the faculty and staff have been so welcoming and she thinks that the students are incredible!

  • Meet Paul Hackett, a visual artist-teacher who joins Winchester High School after working at the Boston Arts Academy.  Paul has a BFA in Glass and MAT in Teaching/Art Education from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.  While at MassArt, Paul helped develop the East Meets West travel program to Cam Ocai glass school, outside Istanbul, Turkey.  Between his degrees, Paul worked as a production glassblower and teacher, both on the East Coast and in San Diego, California.  In addition to teaching, Paul enjoys traveling with his wife, also an art teacher, to National Parks around the United States.

  • Meet Kelsey Ring our new math teacher.  Kelsey graduated from Stoneham High as a three sport athlete doing soccer, basketball and outdoor track.  She got her bachelor’s  and master’s degrees from Clark in Math and Education.  She always loved math and realized that she really wanted to work with high school students.  This is Kelsey’s first year at WHS and she loves it!
