Hello WHS!  I hope that you were able to get out and enjoy the wonderful fall weather this weekend!  I so enjoy this time of year.  I was happy to see and meet many of you at the our WHS Parent Faculty Meeting last week.  I am especially appreciative that the WHSPFA voted to purchase three beautiful park quality tables for our outside patio in front of the school.  Thank you!  It is not too late to donate-You can send in your donations to the office in an envelope marked-WHSFA Direct Appeal. ($75 suggested family donation-but any amount is gratefully accepted).

We have some Monday updates.

  • PSAT exams will be given this week on Weds.,October 14, 2015 across the nation as was determined by the College Board.  Students will test for the first three periods of the day and if they are juniors, they should report to their History classes.  Sophomores who registered will be told of their testing locations on Tuesday.  We can take LATE registrations on Tuesday, the cost is $18 and checks should be made out to Winchester High School with PSAT and your child’s name in the memo line.  If you need financial support, please email me directly at ckelley@winchesterps.org

  • We are looking for a student representative for our School Council.  The School Council is made up of teachers, community members, parents and students (as well as the principal).  We will meet regularly for updates and to put together a School Improvement Plan.  This is a GREAT opportunity for those student leaders who wish to be an important, though not always visible role.  If you wish to be considered you should know that we will meet before school at 6:45 am monthly (or less if we set up sub committee meetings that will meet at different times).  Please email Mrs. Kelley at ckelley@winchesterps.org if you are interested.  I believe that the parents are looking for a parent representative as well.  The applications are due by October 16th.   The nomination form is found at:  chrome-extension://gbkeegbaiigmenfmjfclcdgdpimamgkj/views/app.html

  • Yearbook Update-Just a reminder for seniors and senior parents-the deadline for senior portraits and parent dedication pages is Wednesday, October 28th.  Information about portrait specifications and forms for parent ads can be found at the WHS Yearbook website at:  http://winchesteryearbook.jimdo.com  Any student can also purchase a yearbook for the 2016 edition on the site.

  • The Parent/Faculty Association (PFA) is an important and active part of Winchester High School, and they would like their communications to reach all families. Each family can sign up to receive any or all of the following: Monthly Newsletter, a weekly Community News and Events email, Class of 20xx emails, PFA Announcements and WHS E-blasts . WHS E-blasts are used for our most timely and important emails that pertain directly to students and/or their parents. If you would like to sign up to receive these mailings or you would like to update your profile in any way, please click Constant Contact Sign Up Tools

Memo Shout-Outs- We have so much to be proud of here at WHS.  I have asked staff to send me regular shout out announcements so we can recognize some of our great happenings for our WHS community. (If you have a shout out to share-please email me at ckelley@winchesterps.org)

  • Congratulations to students Peter Anderson and Jonathan Santoro who are our representatives to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Student Advisory Council (Jonathan is also on the state council as well as our area district council). This Council meets regularly to get a student’s perspective so that members of our Department of Education can use that information to make informed decisions.  The themes looked at this year are College and Career Readiness and Civic Engagement.  We are proud to have these two impressive young men represent WHS at these important meetings.

  • The Autumnal WPS Student Art Exhibition is now at the Winchester Public Library.  There are 70 WPS students from K-12 featured in this year’s exhibit.  Please come by the Library from now until November 30th.  In addition, there will be a special reception (with awards and refreshments) on Nov. 10th from 6-8pm.  All are welcomed.  Congratulations to our very own Art Department, our outstanding educators and Visual Art Director as well as the many talented student artists featured in this exhibit.  Also a special shout-out to Andrew at Frame Haven and Dave at Winchester Art and Frame who donated time and materials to make our art work look spectacular!

Team WHS-

In this section, I hope to introduce or reintroduce our community to members of our community.

Meet Dr. Scott Spencer, one of our new Social Studies teachers.  Scott has his doctorate in history from University of Virginia with prior degrees from Boston University and Boston College.  In addition to teaching at the college level for the past ten years, Scott has been a stay at home dad raising his two lovely daughters.  Prior to that, Scott was working in international finance in the US and internationally and has travelled extensively.  Scott is so excited to be a part of WHS and to work with our students each day.  Welcome Scott!
